17,000 Years of Continuous Human Habitation

Ocmulgee National Monument is a memorial to the relationship of people and natural resources in this corner of North America. We preserve a continuous record of human life in the Southeast from the earliest times to the present, there is evidence here of 17,000 years of human habitation. A diversity of natural and cultural resources combines to provide an abundance of reasons to visit.

All of the many histories preserved here at Ocmulgee National Monument have one lesson for us that we see time and again ... ALL THINGS ARE CONNECTED ....     This idea reminds us of our personal connections to the natural resource of the planet Earth and all of the people who have worked to create a society back through time.

 

Earth Day & Junior Ranger Day

Saturday April 17 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

                       Free Trees!

  • Georgia Forestry Commission's Flint River Nursery is giving away native hardwood trees to celebrate Earth Day.
  • Junior Ranger Day - Children can earn a Junior Ranger badge and patch by filling out a booklet. Children can make pottery like the Native Americans and take it home with them.
  • There will be live animals from Dauset Trails.
  • The Art and Science Museum will have a telescope here to look at sunspots.
  • The Ocmulgee Audubon Society will have a guided bird watching walk at 9:00 a.m.
  • And other Earth Day activities for the whole family.

Ocmulgee Indian Celebration

The Superintendent and staff of Ocmulgee National Monument would like to invite you to the 2010 Annual Ocmulgee Indian Celebration, September 18-19, 2010 from 10:00 am to 6:00 p.m. each day. This special event has an entry fee of $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 6-12 years old. Children under 6 years old are free. $2 for active military with I.D. Native dancers from Southeastern Tribes will be in attendance and will perform traditional dances, music, storytelling, and demonstrations. Dancing and music programs will take place on the grounds adjacent to the visitor center and are continuous throughout the day. Visitor participation is welcomed. Limited seating is provided. There will also be food vendors and various children's activities.
